Study Permit in Canada

Work while studying in Canada

Yes, as an international student in Canada, you may be eligible to work while studying and even after you graduate, thanks to Citizenship Canada’s work permit programs for international students. You may qualify for on-campus, off-campus, or post-graduate work permits. However, under the new regulations, your permit will become invalid 90 days after you complete your study program. Students are required to actively pursue their studies in Canada, and in some cases, students enrolled in designated programs or institutions may be permitted to work part-time without needing a separate work permit.

Differences in Working While Studying in Canada

Co-op or Internship

If you are a study permit holder in Canada, you may have the opportunity to work while studying, either on-campus or off-campus, under specific conditions. Additionally, you may be eligible for work after graduation through Canada’s work permit programs.

Working On-Campus

As a full-time student enrolled at a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada, you can work on-campus without needing an additional work permit. Your work must align with the guidelines set by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for students with a valid study permit.

Co-op or Internship

Many study programs in Canada require a co-op or internship as part of the curriculum. If your program requires it, you will need a work permit to participate. To qualify, your Study Permit Canada must be valid, and the co-op or internship must be a compulsory part of your academic program at a designated institution.

Working Off-Campus

If you have a recognized Canadian credential from a designated Canadian institution., you can work off-campus up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. This allows you to gain valuable work experience while you work while studying in Canada without needing a separate work permit.

Working After Graduation

Once you complete your studies, you may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to continue working in Canada. The PGWP is an open work permit that allows you to work for any employer in Canada for a period that matches the length of your academic program, up to a maximum of three years.

These work opportunities can significantly enhance your experience as a Study in Canada holder and provide valuable skills that will be beneficial for your future career.
